GAME LOG
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Minnesota Twins are erasing last season's
Texas memories, one game at a time.
Corey Koskie hit a bases-loaded triple, and Butch Huskey added a
two-run double as the Twins beat Texas 10-5 Saturday night for
their fourth win in five games against the Rangers.
The Twins were defeated by Texas in all 12 games last season.
"No real explanation," Koskie said. "Sometimes you just get
on a roll against certain teams."
In 1999, the Rangers rolled over Minnesota, but on Saturday they
lost to the Twins by at least five runs for the third time this
season. Texas, baseball's top-hitting team, has only lost by five
or more runs two other times.
"Let's not overreact short-term," Texas manager Johnny Oates
said. "You give up 10 runs, you've got a pretty good chance of
losing."
When asked whether he thought Minnesota's turnaround against
Texas was attributable to the Twins or the Rangers, Oates paused
before responding.
"We gave up 10 runs the last two nights," he said.
Twins skipper Tom Kelly didn't want to overreact either. He
knocked on his wooden desk for good luck when he was reminded of
his team's 2000 record against Texas.
"They're very dangerous," Kelly said. "They can pound you.
You have to be careful."
Joe Mays (2-6) won for the first time since May 3, and Midre
Cummings and Cristian Guzman homered for Minnesota, which picked up
its 12th comeback victory of the season.
"Our guys have been swinging the bat real well against them,"
Mays said. "It's a turn of the tides."
Ruben Mateo hit a two-run homer and David Segui had three RBI for the Rangers, who fell to 2-3 on their current nine-game
roadtrip.
Mays allowed five runs -- four earned -- and six hits in 6 2/3
innings. The right-hander struck out three and walked four.
Trailing 4-1, Minnesota scored four runs off Mark Clark (3-3) in
the fourth to take the lead.
Ron Coomer led off with a single. After two walks loaded the
bases, Koskie tripled to center. Matthew LeCroy singled in Koskie
to make it 5-4.
Huskey hit a two-run double off Clark in the fifth to make it
7-4.
"We're gonna have to win with fundamentals, and for the most
part that's what we've done against the Rangers," Huskey said.
Clark allowed seven runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Segui's RBI double off Travis Miller in the seventh made it 7-5.
Denny Hocking hit a sacrifice fly off Mike Venafro in the bottom of
the inning.
Guzman hit a two-run shot off Jeff Zimmerman in the eighth.
Texas scored three runs in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie
on Segui's RBI double and Mateo's seventh homer of the year.
The Rangers scored an unearned run in the first without getting
a hit. Chad Curtis reached on Huskey's error at first before Mays
issued consecutive walks to Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro and Segui.
Mays got out of the jam when he struck out Mateo and got Mike
Lamb to fly out to left.
Texas wasted a leadoff triple by Royce Clayton in the second and
Minnesota tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Cummings'
second homer of the year.
Before the game, the Rangers activated outfielder Rusty Greer
from the 15-day disabled list. Greer, who had been out since April
13 with a pulled left hamstring, hit a pinch-hit double in the
ninth.
On Wednesday night, Mays was hit in his left hand by a foul
ball, while he was sitting in the dugout. He immediately went to
the hospital for X-rays and the injury was diagnosed as a deep
bruise.
