DENVER (AP) _ Jeffrey Hammonds hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in
the eighth inning and Todd Helton raised his average to .421 as the
Colorado Rockies beat the Houston Astros 8-6 Wednesday night for a
three-game sweep. Helton, who leads the major leagues in hitting, went 1-for-2 and
walked three times for the second straight game, helping Colorado
overcome a 4-0 deficit. Jeff Cirillo, who went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs,
singled off Joe Slusarski (0-3) with one out in the eighth. Helton
grounded into a fielder's choice and Hammonds connected on an 0-2
pitch, sending Colorado on to its fifth consecutive win. It was the first three-game sweep of the Astros since Sept.
11-13, 1996. Gabe White (6-0) pitched a perfect eighth, and Jose Jimenez
finished for his 10th save. Houston, which outhit Colorado 14-12, lost its ninth straight
road game. Astros starter Jose Lima, winless since April 5, allowed six
runs and nine hits in six innings. He gave up two more homers,
raising his season total to 22 in 62 innings, yet lowered his ERA
from 8.19 to 8.03. Lance Berkman went 3-for-4 with a homer and drove in four runs
for the second straight night. Rockies starter Masato Yoshii, 0-5 with three no decisions since
winning his only game on April 17 at Arizona, allowed five runs and
12 hits in 6 1-3 innings, leaving with a 6-4 lead. Lima hit an RBI groundout in the second, and Houston made it 4-0
in the third on Berkman's two-run single and Julio Lugo's RBI
single. Colorado tied it in the bottom half on Cirillo's two-run homer
and Darren Bragg's two-run double. Cirillo's RBI double put the Rockies ahead 5-4 in the fourth,
and Lansing hit a solo homer in the sixth. Berkman tied it with a
two-run homer in the seventh off Stan Belinda. Notes: Houston 3B Ken Caminiti rested his left hamstring, strained
running out a sixth inning single on Tuesday. ... The Rockies got a
scare during batting practice when OF Larry Walker was hit on the
right elbow by a liner off the bat of Yoshii. Walker, on the DL
since May 11 with an injured right elbow, collapsed in pain, but
was reported OK moments later after trainers tended to him. .. The
Rockies, who are averaging 40,854 fans at home, reached the million
mark in attendance, with 1,019,742 in 25 home dates.
