GAME LOG
MONTREAL (AP) -- Randy Wolf would have appreciated the offensive
support he got from the Philadelphia Phillies just a few innings
earlier.
"The best thing would have been to have the explosion in the
first inning," Wolf said after the Philadelphia Phillies scored
six times in the seventh inning to beat the Montreal Expos 8-1
Saturday night.
Wolf (7-4) scattered six hits and allowed just one run -- on
Vladimir Guerrero's RBI single in the sixth -- in seven strong
innings as the Phillies won for the seventh time in nine games,
including five of six.
"It was a nail-biter until the top of the seventh," Wolf said.
"It was a tough game."
Wolf allowed just two hits through the first five innings before
allowing three straight hits to begin the sixth.
Rondell White doubled and scored on Guerrero's RBI single up the
middle to draw Montreal to within one at 2-1.
Vidro's single to right advanced Guerrero to third. Wolf then
struck out Lee Stevens looking and got out of the jam as Abreu
easily doubled Vidro off first when he caught Barrett's liner and
threw to first.
"Those runs were huge because they had a big inning in the
sixth," Wolf said. "They started to hit and things were falling
in. They could have taken it into the seventh inning down just by
one. That was the biggest part of the game."
Carl Pavano (8-4) allowed two runs in the first on Bobby Abreu's
RBI double and Scott Rolen's sacrifice fly. Pavano then shut out
the Phillies for the next five innings before leaving the game due
to tightness in his right triceps after the sixth, with the Expos
trailing 2-1.
"We had to take Pavano out," Montreal manager Felipe Alou
said. "He told us he had enough. He felt something and had to
leave the game after the sixth. We don't think it's serious."
Pavano, who allowed five hits, said the pain had nothing to do
with the elbow injury that sidelined him for virtually all of the
second half of last season.
"It just got stiff and tight and it felt like I was getting
weaker as the game went on," Pavano said. "So instead of chancing
it the rest of the season and hurting the team, I figure we've got
seven days until my next start and we'll get it taken care of."
Scott Forster came in for the Expos to begin the seventh and
allowed a leadoff single to Desi Relaford, who Wolf sacrificed to
second.
Relaford stole third and scored when shortstop Orlando Cabrera
misplayed Kevin Sefcik's grounder. Mickey Morandini's two-run
single made it 4-1. Abreu walked and Rolen hit an RBI single off
reliever Brad Rigby for his second RBI to make it 5-1.
Pat Burrell singled to score Abreu, and Rolen and Burrell scored
when third baseman Michael Barrett cut off the throw home and threw
past second baseman Jose Vidro all the way to the wall in
right-center field.
"We got a break there and got a couple of runs," Burrell said.
"As soon as I saw it go by (Vidro), I knew it was going to go to
the wall. I didn't see where it ended up but I could tell by the
angle, and I was pretty much just going."
Game notes Ron Gant was the only Phillies starter who didn't get a hit
as Philadelphia finished with 11 hits in the game. ... Phillies
catchers Mike Lieberthal and Tom Prince have combined to throw out
12 of the last 21 runners who have attempted to steal. Over the
span of 22 games, Lieberthal has thrown out 10 of 18 would-be base
stealers, while Prince, who started Saturday night, has retired two
of three. ... Philadelphia reliever Jeff Brantley has earned a save
in his last five appearances and has a perfect record in nine save
opportunities this season. ... The Expos remain just two wins short
of 1,000 at Olympic Stadium. Montreal is 998-825 at home since
moving to the Big O to begin the 1977 season. ... Stevens needs two
homers for 100 for his career. Stevens, acquired from Texas midway
through spring training, has 16 homers this season after hitting a
career-high 24 homers for the Rangers last season. ... Rigby, who
allowed three hits and two runs _ one earned _ in 1-3 of an inning,
was optioned to Triple-A Ottawa after the game. RHP Jovanny Lara
was recalled from Double-A Harrisburg.
