GAME LOG
MONTREAL (AP) -- Jose Vidro hopes opposing pitchers continue to
concentrate their efforts on dealing with Vladimir Guerrero.
Vidro and Guerrero homered to back Mike Johnson's seven
scoreless innings as the Montreal Expos avoided a three-game sweep
Sunday with a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.
"I hope they keep it the same way," Vidro said. "Don't think
too much about me right now, just keep worrying about Vladimir and
I'm going to do my stuff. It's been pretty good so far, so why
change?"
Vidro's first-inning single off Paul Byrd (1-6) made him the
first NL player with 100 hits this season. It also tied his
career-best hitting streak of 10 games, set last season.
His 12th homer with one out in third gave the Expos a 1-0 lead
and tied his career-high for homers.
"I've been working very hard all year and it feels good to put
up those kind of stats," Vidro said.
Guerrero, who went 2-for-3 with a walk to raise his average to
.365, homered off reliever Jeff Brantley in the eighth for his 99th
hit this season.
"I think Mike Johnson did everything for us today out there,"
Vidro said. "We got two home runs by me and Vlady and an RBI by
Michael Barrett, which was great, but he was the whole game. I
think all the credit goes to him."
Johnson (3-2) allowed five hits and three walks, striking out
four. Steve Kline allowed one run over the last two innings for his
eighth save.
"They said that I was done after the seventh inning and I
didn't question anything that they said," Johnson said. "They
said I was done, and that was it. We have Steve Kline coming in
behind me, who's just been doing really well for us all year, so I
don't put too much into it."
The attendance was 13,164, the first crowd more than 8,635
through the first seven games of the Expos' current 12-game
homestand.
The Phillies lost for just the third time in their last 10
games. After winning two of three in New York, they finished 4-2 on
their road trip.
"It was a good week for us," manager Terry Francona said. "It
would have been a hell of a week to go out today with a win but we
all feel good about what we're trying to do now. We have a day off
and we'll come back and see if we can continue it."
Barrett singled in each of his three at-bats, including a
one-out RBI single in the fourth to drive in Geoff Blum, who
doubled to lead off the inning.
Phillies rookie Pat Burrell went 3-for-4, including an RBI
single off Kline with two outs in the eighth to draw Philadelphia
to within one at 2-1.
Byrd allowed seven hits and two runs over six innings in his
second start for the Phillies since being recalled from the minors.
"Byrd gave us six good innings," Francona said. "You would
hope that under other circumstances he'd leave with a lead. It was
pretty good pitching."
