MIAMI (AP) _ Fred McGriff hit two solo home runs and the Tampa
Bay Devil Rays rallied against Ryan Dempster to beat the Florida
Marlins 8-3 Friday night. Bubba Trammell drove in three runs as Tampa Bay improved to 6-4
in interleague play. The start of the game was delayed by rain for
33 minutes. Dempster (9-5), the Marlins' representative in Tuesday's
All-Star game, struck out 11 in 6 2-3 innings. The Devil Rays scored three times with two outs in the sixth to
take a 5-3 lead. Trammell hit an RBI triple and Vinny Castilla and
Felix Martinez singled home runs. Trammell's double in the seventh drove in Greg Vaughn, who had
singled. Miguel Cairo hit an RBI single in the ninth and Trammell
drove in another run with a grounder. Albie Lopez (5-6) allowed three runs in 5 2-3 innings. Jim Mecir
pitched two innings for his first save. McGriff homered leading off the second, then hit his 17th home
run to start the fourth. McGriff has 406 career home runs, tying him with Duke Snider for
30th on the all-time list. Florida took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on Derrek Lee's two-run
homer. Mike Lowell singled and Lee connected for his 18th homer. The Marlins scored once in the fourth. Luis Castillo singled,
stole second and advanced to third on catcher's John Flaherty's
throwing error, and scored on Mark Kotsay's sacrifice fly. Notes: Dempster is the first Canadian pitcher to be selected to
the All-Star game since Ferguson Jenkins in 1972. ... The rain
delay was only the Marlins' second this season. At this point last
year, the Marlins had eight rain delays. ... Vaughn was activated
from the disabled list prior to the game. To make room, the Devil
Rays placed INF Bobby Smith on the 15-day disabled list after
injuring his right knee in a collision with Detroit first baseman
Robert Fick on Wednesday. ... National League opposition is far
from strange for most Devil Rays' players. The Devil Rays currently
have 19 players on the roster who have played in the NL.
