GAME LOG
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Matt Clement pitched six strong innings as
the San Diego Padres beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 Monday
night for their eighth win in nine games. Ruben Rivera and Phil Nevin homered for the Padres, who have won
all four of their meetings with the Phillies this season. Clement (11-10) allowed two runs _ one earned _ on seven hits.
He walked two and struck out four. Clement started the seventh, but was pulled quickly after Tomas
Perez singled and Rob Ducey reached on an error. Carlos Almanzar
got two outs, gave up an RBI single to Scott Rolen and struck out
Mike Lieberthal to end the inning. Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 30th save in 36
opportunities. San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the second on Rivera's homer, his
15th, off Robert Person (5-4). Eric Owens extended the lead with a
two-out RBI single. Damian Jackson made it 4-0 with a two-out, two-run triple. Rolen hit his 20th of the season in the sixth to make it 4-1,
but Nevin hit a two-run shot _ his 23rd of the season _ in the
seventh off Mark Holzemer to give the Padres a five-run lead. Bobby Abreu hit a two-run homer off Donne Wall in the ninth to
make it 6-4. Clement worked out of jams in the second and third innings. With runners on second and third and one out, Clement got Perez
to pop out and struck out Person to end the second. In the third, Travis Lee was hit by a pitch and Pat Burrell
singled. Clement settled down and got Marlon Anderson to ground
into a double play before Perez ended the threat with a groundout. Person pitched 5 2-3 innings, allowed five hits and four runs.
He struck out eight, walked four and retired 10 in a row during one
stretch, but remain winless in his last eight starts. Notes: Owens signed a two-year extension through the 2002 season.
Terms were not disclosed. ... Of Rivera's 68 hits this season, 31
have gone for extra bases. Last season, 40 of his 80 hits went for
extra bases. ... Anderson made his season debut for the Phillies at
second base. He went 1-for-3 and made two sensational diving stops
to rob Desi Relaford and Mike Darr of hits. ... Person's last win
came on May 27 at Los Angeles. ... Rolen has hit 20 or more homers
in four consecutive seasons. The last Phillies player to accomplish
the feat was Mike Schmidt, who hit 20-plus homers in nine straight
seasons from 1978-1987. ... Klesko stole his 18th base of the
season. His previous high was six set in 1996. ... Ducey,
re-acquired by the Phillies earlier in the day, pinch-hit and was
safe on an error in the seventh.
