ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- Today's scheduled game
between the Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Devil Rays was
postponed as early as Saturday due to Hurricane Gordon, which is
expected to hit the Tampa area. The game has been rescheduled for October 2 if it affects
Oakland's postseason chances. But the A's, who are tied with
the Cleveland Indians for the wild card lead and two games
behind first-place Seattle in the American League West, play at
home in the afternoon on October 1 and would have to travel
cross-country for the matchup. A team release said the game was postponed out of concern for
the safety of fans and players driving to the game and also to
safely accomodate the air travel of the Athletics, who left for
Washington immediately following Saturday's 5-2 victory. Oakland
begins a series with the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. The decision was made by Devil Rays officials after consulting
with representatives from the Pinellas County Emergency
Operations Center, the commissioner's office and the A's.
