GAME LOG
DENVER (AP) _ Preston Wilson homered, doubled and scored twice
as the Florida Marlins beat the Colorado Rockies 3-1 in a
rain-shortened game that ended in the seventh inning Saturday. Pitching in a persistent drizzle and a wind chill in the high
20s, Chuck Smith (5-6) gave up one run and four hits in six-plus
innings for the Marlins, who handed Colorado its seventh loss in
eight games. Several players from each team wore ski masks in an attempt to
stay warm, and one Florida player was spotted with a cup of hot
chocolate while sitting in the dugout in the sixth. Rockies starter John Wasdin (0-2), making his third start of the
season, struck out a career-high 11 in seven innings. He gave up
three runs on six hits and walked one. Staked to a three-run lead, Smith surrendered a run on Butch
Huskey's RBI double with none out in the Rockies seventh, but
umpire Ed Montague then summoned the grounds crew. Colorado's comeback bid ended 42 minutes later when the poor
weather continued and Montague called the game. One day after becoming the 23rd player in major league history
with 30 homers and 30 steals, Wilson led off the sixth with a solo
home run to give the Marlins a 3-0 lead. With a steady mist beginning to fall, Florida opened the scoring
in the third on Wilson's one-out double, an RBI single by Mike
Lowell and a run-scoring double by Derrek Lee. Notes: Rockies OF Jeffrey Hammonds played catch for about 10
minutes but missed his fourth straight game with a sore right
shoulder. ... Colorado RHP Masato Yoshii is scheduled to have
surgery on Thursday to remove bone spurs in his right elbow. ...

six games. ... Wilson struck out in the second and is seven away
from tying Bobby Bonds' single-season record of 189 in 1970. ...
Colorado OF Juan Pierre, who has a 15-game hitting streak, did not
play.
