LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Dodgers ace righthander Kevin Brown was activated from the 15-day disabled list and faced the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series.

To make room for Brown, the Dodgers optioned rookie lefthander Jeff Williams to Triple-A Albuquerque of the Pacific Coast League.

Brown fractured his right pinky on a bunt attempt in a 6-5 victory over the New York Mets on April 8. After pitching seven innings in a 1-0 loss to the Braves on Tuesday, he is 1-1 with a 3.50 ERA in three starts this season. He has allowed 18 hits in 18 innings this season.

The 35-year-old Brown signed a seven-year, $105 million contract as a free agent after the 1998 season. His average salary is the highest in baseball.

From 1996-99, Brown went 69-35 with a 2.50 ERA and 842 strikeouts in 136 games.

The Dodgers are the fifth team for Brown, who has a lifetime record of 158-108.

Brown helped pitch the Florida Marlins to a World Series triumph in 1997 and was the ace of the National League champion San Diego Padres the following season. He also has pitched for Texas and Baltimore.

Williams, 27, has appeared in four games, allowing seven runs, eight hits and six walks in three innings.
