Notre Dame drops from top 25

SportsTicker

Florida State kept the top spot in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll while Notre Dame fell out of the rankings.

In the poll released Sunday morning, Florida State (2-0) received 44 of 59 first-place votes and 1,455 points, 22 more than last week, to secure the No. 1 ranking.

Voters did not penalize the Seminoles for an exciting 41-35 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference foe Georgia Tech (1-1), which dropped from No. 10 to No. 13.

Notre Dame (1-2) was one of two teams to drop from the rankings after its 28-23 loss to Purdue (2-0), which moved up from No. 16 to No. 14.

No. 19 Virginia also fell out of the top 25 after a 33-14 rout by new coach Tommy Bowden and unranked Clemson.

Newcomers to the rankings this week are No. 24 Colorado State (2-0) and No. 25 Marshall (2-0), which manhandled Liberty 63-3.

Defending national champion Tennessee (1-0) regained the second position, flip-flopping spots with Penn State (3-0) for the second straight week.

Although idle, the Volunteers received seven more points than last Sunday, garnering 1,392, and collected eight first-place votes.

The Nittany Lions fell one spot after a mediocre performance against regional rival Pittsburgh. They needed a blocked punt by linebacker LaVar Arrington in the final seconds to eke out a 20-17 victory.

Penn State, one of only two teams in the top 25 with three wins, received the other seven first-place votes and 1,369 points, 37 fewer than last week's total.

Nos. 4-9 remain unchanged, with Florida (2-0), Michigan (2-0), Nebraska (2-0), idle Texas A&M (1-0), Wisconsin (2-0) and idle Miami (2-0) holding firm in the top 10.

The fourth-ranked Gators meet Tennessee on Saturday in a Southeastern Conference clash while the Hurricanes battle Penn State.

With the Yellow Jackets losing to Florida State, Virginia Tech (2-0) and Georgia (2-0) each jumped a spot to 10th and 11th, respectively. Ohio State (1-1) is up two spots to No. 12, followed by Georgia Tech.

Purdue (2-0) is 14th followed by Arkansas (1-0) and Kansas State (1-0), who each leaped two slots. The Wildcats opened their season Saturday with a 40-0 trouncing of Temple.

Arizona (2-1) fell two spots to No. 17 after a lackluster 34-19 victory over Middle Tennessee State. Alabama (2-0) made one of the biggest improvements in the top 25, jumping from 22nd to 18th after a 37-10 rout of Houston.

Idle Southern California (1-0) moved up a spot to No. 19, with North Carolina State (3-0) jumping from 24th to 20th with a 38-9 win against overmatched William & Mary.

Joining Colorado State and Marshall in the final five are UCLA (1-1), which fell from No. 13 to No. 21, Texas (2-1), which is up a spot to No. 22, and Arizona State (1-0), which improved three slots to No. 23.
