CHICAGO (AP) -- Taking the direct approach paid off for Sylvain Cote and the Chicago Blackhawks. Cote's power-play goal with 1:44 left in overtime Wednesday night lifted the Blackhawks to a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. After a failed Vancouver clearing attempt, Cote stepped in from the left point and ripped an unscreened shot over the right shoulder of Felix Potvin. "We weren't taking too many shots with a clear view," Cote said. "I thought (Vancouver's Mark) Messier might have deflected it up a little bit and it surprised everyone. Sometimes, surprise is a good thing. It turned out good for us." Cote connected with only three seconds remaining in a Vancouver penalty for too many men on the ice to give Chicago its first overtime win in nine games (1-2-6) this season. "I saw it. He just beat me clean on the stick side," said Potvin, who stopped 31 shots. "Some nights I could stop it, but he just hit the corner." Alex Zhamnov and Eric Daze also scored for Chicago, which has won three of its last four games and three straight at home. Chicago's Jocelyn Thibault turned aside 26 shots Peter Schaefer and Todd Bertuzzi scored for the Canucks, who have won just three of their last 21 games (3-14-4). After Zhamnov scored at 6:28 of the second period to tie it 2-2, both goalies made several strong saves in the third to send the game to overtime. Potvin stopped Chicago's Tony Amonte from point-blank range with 30.9 seconds remaining. Amonte's shot hit Potvin's glove and bounced off the post before Potvin covered up. Daze opened the scoring on a backhander at 6:08 of the first, but the Canucks led 2-1 after 20 minutes. Schaefer lofted in a rebound of Ed Jovanovski's drive from the point at 9:42. Bertuzzi then scored into a wide-open net on the power play with 5:26 left in the period. Zhamnov tied it 2-2 with the only goal of the second period at 6:28. Left open in the slot, he fired in Dean McAmmond's pass from behind the net.
