Paul scores, Steve assists in first NHL meeting

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- The long-awaited meeting of the Kariya brothers ended in a tie.

Steve Kariya, Paul Kariya
Vancouver's Steve Kariya, bottom, crosses paths with big brother Paul of Anaheim.

"It was different," Anaheim's Paul Kariya said after his second-period goal helped the Mighty Ducks to a 2-2 tie with the Vancouver Canucks and his kid brother, Steve.

"This was the first time we've played against each other at any level."

"It was certainly fun seeing him play. I haven't had many opportunities to see him for a few years," said the Canucks rookie, who helped Vancouver jump out to a 1-0 lead with an assist on a first period goal.

The two got closer than either one expected. Normally both left wingers, Steve Kariya frequently switched sides and played in his older brother's face.

"I was certainly surprised to see him on my side," the Anaheim All-Star said. "I'm sure there will be some pictures out of that for the family."

Paul Kariya tied the score at 1 with a power-play goal -- while Steve sat in the penalty box -- at 11:24 of the second period.

"I didn't agree with the call. I didn't think I got my elbow up," said Steve Kariya, who drew only his fifth penalty in 29 games.

Midway through the third period, the older Kariya was called for interference, also his fifth penalty, in 28 games.

That came 6½ minutes after Steve Rucchin's power-play goal had tied the game at 2. The Canucks couldn't take advantage as they finished the game 0-for-3 on power-play opportunites.

The Mighty Ducks have held off 19 straight power plays, helping sustain the tie.

The deadlock didn't reverse either team's fortunes. Anaheim, behind the continued strong play of goalie Guy Hebert, who made his 11th consecutive start Wednesday, is 3-1-2 in its last six games. The Canucks remained with only one win in their last six contests (1-4-1).

Bill Muckalt snapped a 1-1 tie by wristing a shot between Guy Hebert's legs at the 1:41 mark, before the Ducks' recharged power play drew them back into a tie.

Rucchin's off-balanced shot from just left of the goal made it 2-2 at 5:27, 21 seconds after Murray Baron drew a hooking call. It was Anaheim's second power-play conversion of the game.

Paul Kariya's game-tying 50-footer past Garth Snow at the 11:24 mark of the second period, less than a minute into Steve's penalty, snapped a streak of 25 consecutive failed power-play opportunities. It was only the Ducks' fifth goal in their last 53 opportunities with the man advantage.
