Stars gain Matvichuk, lose Sydor

DALLAS -- The Dallas Stars returned All-Star Darryl Sydor to injured reserve Saturday and activated fellow defenseman Richard Matvichuk.

Sydor has missed the last two games with a groin strain suffered October 20 in a 2-1 win over Edmonton. Saturday's move was made retroactive to that day.

Matvichuk has been sidelined three games since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on October 17, one day after injuring himself in a 3-2 loss to Nashville. He is available for Saturday night's game against Tampa Bay.

Sydor has played in only six of Dallas' 11 games this season, missing three after sustaining a fractured left eye socket October 8 in a one-sided fight with Anaheim's Jim McKenzie.

The 27-year-old Sydor helped the Stars to the Stanley Cup last season, recording 14 goals -- nine on the power play -- and 34 assists in 74 games.

A minus-4 with no points in six games this season, Matvichuk was seventh among NHL defensemen with a plus-23 last year. Captain Derian Hatcher's defensive partner, Matvichuk recorded three goals and nine assists in 64 regular season games.

Injured center Joe Nieuwendyk practiced for an hour Friday, and coach Ken Hitchcock said he expects Nieuwendyk, who has been recovering from back spasms, to take the ice at Reunion Arena on Saturday.
