| | DETROIT -- Detroit Red Wings right wing Darren McCarty
will miss the next six to eight weeks after undergoing hernia surgery Friday.
McCarty, who has been on injured reserve since Nov. 12, has
played in only 14 games this season, recording three goals and
five assists. He missed the first three games because of a contract dispute.
The 6-1, 215-pound McCarty has 80, goals, 122 assists and 821
penalty minutes in 383 games over six-plus NHL seasons -- all with Detroit.
The Red Wings enter the day at 20-8-3, with an overtime loss, good for a league-leading 44 points. They signed McCarty on Oct. 7 to a three-year contract worth a reported $5 million.
McCarty, 27, was a member of Detroit's back-to-back Stanley Cup championship teams in 1997 and 1998. He set career highs with 19 goals and 49 points in 1996-97. | |
