Doctor: Neilson's recovery going well

ESPN.com news services

PHILADELPHIA -- Flyers head coach Roger Neilson, who is battling cancer, was discharged from the hospital Thursday.

"Roger is doing extremely well," said Dr. Isadore Brodsky, the chief of oncology hematology at Hahnemann University Hospital, where the 65-year-old Neilson was treated. "His blood counts are almost normal and he is feeling fine. His energy is improving and he has been walking around the halls. He has to take a few medications, mainly to protect himself from any infections."

Neilson underwent a stem cell transplant on March 10 after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in December. He will be re-examined on Monday and is expected to undergo three to five weeks of rehabilitation.

Neilson may be able to rejoin the Flyers "a lot sooner than we thought," Brodsky said.

Neilson hopes to return to the team for the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Assistant Craig Ramsay is the interim head coach until Neilson returns.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
