| | PITTSBURGH -- Carolina Hurricanes center Rod Brind'Amour suffered a concussion and was removed from the ice on a stretcher after being checked into the boards by Pittsburgh's Bob Boughner on Monday night.

Brind'Amour had his head immobilized, but was alert and moving his arms when he was taken to the Hurricanes' locker room for evaluation during Pittsburgh's 3-2 victory.
Brind'Amour might not be able to fly back with the team because the pressure of high elevations could aggravate the concussion, coach Paul Maurice said.
"He was knocked out briefly," Maurice said. "We still have to make the decision on whether he is going to stay here overnight for more tests."
Maurice said Brind'Amour was sitting up in the locker room and was coherent. He said he had not seen the tape of the hit but speculated that Brind'Amour might have been elbowed in the head.
Boughner, who received a major penalty from referee Dan Marouelli for boarding and a game misconduct, had both arms up when he pushed Brind'Amour into the boards late in the second period.
Brind'Amour, acquired from Philadelphia on Jan. 23, has four goals and nine assists in 31 games for Carolina. Boughner came to the Penguins on March 13 from Nashville in an effort to beef up Pittsburgh's defense.
"The penalty to Boughner was real questionable," Penguins coach Herb Brooks said. "I don't know what Dan's reading on the thing was, but it wasn't a charge. He didn't hit him from behind. It was the force in which he took him to the boards that caused it." | |
